Depression Recovery

Famous actress diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Patty Duke once said, "My recovery from manic depression has been an evolution, not a sudden miracle." Indeed, depression recovery cannot happen overnight. It's just normal for a depressed individual to hope and pray that he would recover from depression in just a few days or weeks. But in reality, recovery does not happen that fast.

If you suffered from depression and are on your way to recovery, there are a lot of things you can do to help yourself. But how do we define recovery from depression? Depression recovery happens when you no longer feel the illness and you’re back to your old self again. It is returning to a life that you cherished.

You can discuss your recovery from depression with your doctor. Be open about your feelings about it. Ask your doctor what needs to be done for you to reach full recovery. Of course, proper medication, therapy, family and peer support will all be instrumental on your road to recovery.

It's actually you who's in charge of your own recovery. Ask yourself what should I do to feel better again?

These things may help:

Stick to a healthy lifestyle. Your recovery will be fast and smooth if you stick to healthy eating, regular sleep pattern, regular exercise and the avoidance of alcohol and illegal drugs.

Be aware of the signs and symptoms of depression. You should take note of depression symptoms and educate your family about it. Your family should be able to help you identify changes in you that could mean a recurrence of depression. They could also help you cope with depression.

Choose the most effective treatment for you. You should play an active role in your treatment. Talk to your doctor about your medications and ask him to monitor improvements in your mental condition. You should also find treatment that does not cause too much negative side effects on your body.

Get rid of your attitude that leads to depression. You will not get better completely if you remain to be pessimistic, problematic, overly dependent to others and with poor self esteem. If you want to recover, learn to adapt a positive outlook in life. Love yourself and take care of yourself more. If you have a loved one who is just recovering from depression, here are some things you can do to help him on his journey to recovery.

You can:

  • Be supportive and understanding
  • >
  • Help him find the right health care provider and support groups
  • Instill hope by focusing on your loved one’s strength
  • >
  • Motivate him to get treatment and stick to it
  • Encourage him to live a healthy lifestyle by setting a good example

You can do a lot of things for him and with him like eating only healthy food like vegetables, fish and fruits, engaging in sports or regular exercise, and sticking to a regular sleep pattern. You can also accompany your loved one during his appointments with the doctor.
