Depression Prevention

Depression can happen to anyone. It plays no favorites. But can depression be prevented? Is there such thing as depression prevention? Medical experts say there are indeed ways to prevent depression. Here are some suggestions:

  • Eat healthy and try not to skip meals.
  • Get enough rest and sleep. You need at least eight hours of sleep a night.
  • Stick to a healthy lifestyle. Avoid drugs and alcohol.
  • Strive to be organized. Set your goals in life. Plan everything. This way you know you have goals in life and being depressed is not one of them.
  • Spend time with family and friends. Doing so can help you fight stress.
  • Have time for meditation. You can try Yoga or any other method of meditation. Experts say meditation is good for your health since it can lower your heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Learn to fight stress. To some people, taking a deep breath works when faced with a stressful situation. Walking, listening to good music, and praying also work well for some.
  • Stop worrying. Instead, dwell more on the positive side of life.
  • Seek medical help when you notice that symptoms are getting more serious and do not improve after two weeks.
  • It is still possible that after taking these precautions, one still suffers from depression. Remember that there is no shame to consult a doctor about this condition and take the prescribed medication and treatment or therapy. While the first bout with depression may be hard to avert, a recurrence of depression may be prevented by:
  • Taking your medications as prescribed. It is also recommended to see your doctor regularly.
  • Continuing to take medications and therapy even after your symptoms improve. Medical experts said taking your medicine for at least 6 months after you start to feel better can prevent recurrence of depression.
  • Getting enough sleep and maintaining a regular sleep pattern.
  • Avoiding drugs and alcohol.
  • Engaging in Talk Therapy which can help you address issues in your life.
  • Having someone to talk to especially when we get depressed can easily make us feel better. Sometimes they really do not need to utter a word. Just having them by our side is sometimes enough to ease out all the stress that we’re feeling. However there are times when even the company of friends and loved ones cannot take us away from the depression. This is the time to seek medical help. With the right treatment, the person suffering from depression can be back to his old self in just a matter of weeks.
